Introducing the Terra Project
Terra = soil.
To us, the Terra "family" represents authenticity, truth, and vulnerability—these guide our commitment to preserving the unique character of our land, our soil, and our wine region.
We want to remain true to the essence of Szent György Hill, our ancient volcanic mountain. In return, it gives us wonderful wines that are rich, fresh, bring vibrant flavours, and complex minerality.
With the Terra Project, we want to showcase and represent the different soils and terroirs of our estate, the diversity of the Balaton Uplands, and our winery. Szent György Hill and the Badacsony wine regions were shaped by volcanic activity around 5-6 million years ago. The unique composition of the ancient Pannonian Sea soil (mainly basalt and basalt tuff, as well as marine sediment) ensures the special, lively "minerality" and salty flavour of our wines.
The project was born in 2017. The idea came from two pure and unique Rieslings we have created... Although the grape variety was the same, the two wines had completely different energy and character. One wine (later named Terra I) was made from grapes harvested from Szent György Hill, while Terra II came from Tagyon Hill. They both were harvested and processed in a similar way (hand-picked, whole bunch pressing with a pneumatic press, followed by wild yeast, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks), then kept on lees for 6 months. The bottles wonderfully reflect the volcanic terroir, the soil we work on, as well as the grapes.
We are very happy with these complex, deep wines that give more and more every year.
Later, Terra III joined the project, also 100% Riesling. We like German wines, especially Rieslings, but somehow the wonderful grapes (and the elegant, lively wine made from them) that we harvested from Vászoly are unique to us. Terra III is a worthy continuation of the "series," powerful, tart, slightly herbal, and completely captivating.
We hope that everyone will be able to discover a little piece of Lake Balaton, the volcanoes, and the beauty in our Terra wines!
